Laurent Blanc Lined Up To Replace Sir Alex Ferguson At Manchester United - Report

Girondins de Bordeaux manager Laurent Blanc is reportedly head of the queue to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United when the ageing Scot decides to hang up his chewing gum.

According to The Sunday Mirror, the rise of Bordeaux in the Ligue 1 is said to have placed him in pole position for the coveted spot on the Old Trafford bench, ahead of Inter coach Jose Mourinho and Portugal boss Carlos Queiroz.

Ferguson himself is believed to be an admirer of Blanc since his playing days, when he ended a glittering career with a two-year stint at United.

If health permits, the 67-year-old is expected to continue holding the Red Devils' reins until the end of next season.

A club insider allegedly said: "Replacing Sir Alex will be the toughest job since Matt Busby left the club.

"It isn’t just about winning at United. It’s about playing the game the right way and upholding the traditions.

"There is a lot of admiration at Old Trafford for the job Blanc has done at Bordeaux and the style of play he has imposed.

"It is no secret at the club that he became close to Sir Alex when he was a United player. There is still a lot of mutual respect."

Blanc will turn 44 on Thursday - incidentally, the same age that Sir Alex was when he took command in the red half of Manchester.

Wayne Rooney Pledges Future To Manchester United

New deal on the horizon, reveals Roo...

Wayne Rooney has reiterated his allegiance to Manchester United, explaining that he does not intend to leave unless he is asked to do so by the club.

Spanish giants Barcelona are believed to be interested in adding the Red Devil into their armoury, but the striker insists his future lies at Old Trafford.

"It is nice to be noticed but I have said before, I am really happy at United," Rooney is quoted in the Press Association as saying.

"Unless they tell me otherwise, I can't see myself leaving."

The Old Trafford favourite revealed that he and the club were set to negotiate a new contract in due course.

"I have got two years left on my contract after this year and I am sure we will be negotiating a new deal in the next few months," he said.

"I love the place. It is 30 minutes from home and all my family, and I have got a great chance of winning trophies."

'Roo' went on to talk about his ambitions at United, explaining that he would like to be spoken of in the same breath as the legendary Eric Cantona.

"Although I was an Everton fan, I loved watching United play," he confessed.

"I probably started watching them from about 1994. Cantona was brilliant in that team.

"He had something about him. You looked at him and he was so fearsome. And that was just on the television.

"Imagine playing up against him?

"They won a lot of trophies too. But it was more than just that.

"It was the way they played and attacked. The way they played right to the end. They scored all those last-minute goals, which showed their desire to want to keep going.

"Now, I am there and I have won trophies there myself. I just want to win more."

Manchester United Boss Sir Alex Ferguson Reveals He Has Had Offers To Manage Abroad

Scot admits he had opportunities to leave Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that several foreign clubs have approached him in the past with a view to managing them, yet he has never wanted to leave Manchester United.

The Scot arrived at Old Trafford in 1986 and has gone on to claim enormous success, guiding the Red Devils to 11 Premier League titles and two Champions League wins.

His track record is unrivalled in the modern game and, speaking to the News of the World, Sir Alex admitted it had tempted several clubs to approach him.

I've had offers from clubs to go abroad, but I've never been tempted by them," admitted the 67-year-old.

"I am not going on record to say who they are, but you'd be surprised by the names.

"It flies over your head and you get on with life. You don't leave Manchester United."

Next up for Ferguson is a trip to face Chelsea on Sunday at Stamford Bridge, a ground on which he has failed to win in the Premier League since 2002.

Manchester United Comment: Change Out Wide Is Ober-due

Summer signing is the ace in the pack for Chelsea clash

The clash of the Premier League heavyweights on Sunday could see some French flair tip the scales in favour of Manchester United.

Gabriel Obertan has excelled in the red shirt since being brought in by Sir Alex Ferguson from Bordeaux this summer. Expressive on the ball and in sync with his team-mates, the 20-year-old has impressed since making his bow against Barnsley a fortnight ago.

United meet Chelsea in the crunch match at Stamford Bridge this weekend. The Scot has a plethora of options available to combat the side rejuvenated by Carlo Ancelotti.

At the forefront of his mind will be the hit-and-miss performance against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday night. Highs and lows were in frequent supply, as United sunk to 3-1 down, before launching a cavalry charge to get back on level footing.

At the forefront of the fightback was Obertan. Brought on with 10 minutes to go, he tricked his way past the Russian rearguard with regularity.

Before his introduction, Nani failed to make any impression from out wide. As usual, he danced his way past his marker before playing a different tune than Michael Owen and Federico Macheda when it came to flinging in the final ball.

Nani fired in United's opener in the Charity Shield clash against Chelsea, but his errant form since hinders his hopes of excelling in the Stamford Bridge pressure cooker where precision cannot be at a premium.

The United supremo knows he will have to combat the Blues' intimidating strength through the middle of the pitch.

One solution is to select a midfield three of Anderson, Darren Fletcher and Ryan Giggs, with Dimitar Berbatov made to plough a lone furrow up front as Wayne Rooney will be moved to the left.

Ferguson has never been scared to attack a weakness in the opposition. As dominant as the hosts are in the centre, space is available out wide.

Jose Bosingwa's injury has stemmed their attacking threat from the right. A forward thinking left winger could be just the ticket to success as less defensive discipline will be needed to combat the rampaging Portuguese.

In to the fray could come Obertan. Whether from the start or as a latecomer he has exhibited the application and inspiration necessary to unsettle the Premier League pacesetters.

United have the chance to strike a blow in the title race and the latest addition to the wide ranks is the man to deliver the knockout shot.

Barcelona In Shock £85m Swoop For Manchester United Star Wayne Rooney - Report

The England striker appears to have impressed the Catalan side.....

Barcelona are preparing to launch a world record £85 million raid for Manchester United's superstar striker Wayne Rooney, according to the News of the World.

The tabloid claims that the Camp Nou board hopes to exploit the Red Devils' financial concerns in order to top Real Madrid's £80m purchase of Cristiano Ronaldo last season.

Sir Alex Ferguson is yet to reinvest the money brought in from his Portuguese protege's departure, and it is thought that the Old Trafford club's debts are preventing him from doing so.

Meanwhile, with Rooney set to enter the 2010 World Cup as England's marquee player, Barca believe his arrival next summer would be just the marketing leveller needed after Los Galacticos output in the last transfer window.

However, the Spanish giants are aware of the difficulties in orchestrating such a signing - the main problem being that the player himself has often expressed his desire to remain at United for the rest of his career.

Furthermore, the 24-year-old's wife, Colleen, recently gave birth to the pair's first child, and so he would be naturally wary of destabilising his young family by moving abroad.
